Stylus Review For "Turn Them Off"
Absent Sound – Turn Them Off EP
The Absent Sound’s fifth release opens with “TV Song,” containing the simple and resounding message; “Talk back to your TV as if it had something to say.” The guys from Absent Sound have always put an astounding importance on community, having organized the semi-annual celebration of Element Sircus for years, and this album is a call-to-arms for those looking for more than a mundane electronic/escapist life. It’s obvious that Turn Them Off is the product of A.D.D.-free minds. Absent Sound negotiate these five-minute-plus songs in a pretty calm and collected (though energetic) headspace and the band’s songs turn slowly from start to finish, revealing more mysterious layers as they go along. The time signatures and tempos of “Occupying Home” shift prismatically like few other bands in the city (except maybe their peers Mahogany Frog) could replicate, and the self-effacing angst of “Stuck in Line” is for great dramatic effect. Closer “Hip Hop Knights” keeps its groove for a good seven minutes, making it a great ethereal pop song that closes the album and echoes off into the distance. Spring Is Coming!!!
Oh how nice is this beautiful sunny day. It is making me feel the Spring fever right around the corner. I think Winnipegers or I guess all the prairie provinces enjoy spring time more than others. It is a time where we really blossom again after being confined to the indoors for so long. The cold forces us to stay inside for long periods and we seem to take that opportunity to create and build new works in what ever art form we desire.
So when the slightest warmth and sunny days come rolling in, we are so excited and inspired to get out there and release our creations to the world.
Well that's what I did a lot of this winter and most others too, is create new works. My solo project, SoHoly HeadCase has a set of brand new material and will be showcasing some of it at the Braids show on April 2nd at the Royal Albert here in Winnipeg.
Event Page
I am sure Dave's project Twin is ripping up a whole wack of new stuff too down there in LA and now Mexico. We shall be excited for their return.
Kelly was so lucky to have been invited up North to Churchill by his friends Kerplunks. He will be filling in a gig or two once again on the kit. Also he has been rockin with a couple of other bands as well.
Dobbsicle is busy as a bee playing 300 projects this past winter, most notably Vampires and our
Absent Sound.
Well hope to see you out and about in this beautiful weather, take care everyone.
